High Resolution
Photo-from-Video

Shutta App is a mobile photo-video app designed around user interaction and without any in-feed advertising, Shutta offered brands a range of missions, each designed to provide a distinct level of engagement. The app is available to existing users, but can no longer be downloaded from the app stores.

Shutta App Origins

The Shutta app dates back to 2013, when James Shimell struggled to capture a photo that would do justice to the vibrant flares of colour at the Tarifa Festival of Colours. He captured it on video instead, only to discover that no solution existed to extract a high-res frame. An app was born.

Techcrunch Disrupt NY ‘15

The official launch of the Shutta App happened on May Fourth, 2015 at TechCrunch Disrupt NY. The GoPro Launch Competition was so popular that this concept later grew into Shutta Missions: built-in branded photo contests that entertained users and eliminated any need for in-app advertising.

Best New App in App Store SEA

Highly popular with extreme sports athletes and action photographers, but also (grand)parents and animal lovers, the app soon attained Best New App status in 12 countries in SouthEast Asia. Within a year, it grew to over 1M users in 149 countries – its largest user base being the USA, followed by SEA.

The Pivot

By 2018, the social media landscape had altered – from the Cambridge Analytica scandal to the rise of TikTok – and brand interest in Shutta Missions altered with it. But brands were interested in the digital know-how of the Shutta team. What started as a widening of services ended up a full pivot.

The Future

The Shutta App continues to be available to users “grandfathered” into the system, but it can no longer be downloaded from the app stores. As social media will change again and ad-free “retro” apps that put the user, rather than their data, first may become all the rage. When that happens, we’ll be there.
